5 Misconceptions About Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety is a common feeling that prevents many people from receiving the oral care that they need. Thankfully, sedation dentistry can help make appointments more comfortable for patients with extreme fears. This can also be an effective solution for those who have a sensitive gag reflex or had a negative experience previously at a dentist’s office.

At OC Lifesmiles, cosmetic dentist John Cross, DDS strives to create a warm and welcoming environment for all of his patients. With sedation dentistry, he can help those who suffer from dental anxiety so they can maintain their oral health and have a positive dental experience.

Below, Dr. Cross highlights common misconceptions about sedation dentistry to help patients feel more informed.

Misconception #1: Only used for complex dental procedures.

Sedation dentistry can be used for more than just severe or invasive procedures such as dental implants. For many people, even the thought of visiting the dentist for a routine cleaning can cause stress. Sedation dentistry can be used to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their dental visit, no matter how minimal or complex the treatment may be.

Misconception #2: Sedation dentistry is unsafe.

When performed by a qualified and experienced dentist, sedation dentistry is considered safe. To help ensure your well-being, Dr. Cross will review your medical history and during conscious oral sedation, you will be closely monitored by our OC Lifesmiles team.

Misconception #3: There is only one sedation option.

There are multiple sedations options but at OC Lifesmiles, we typically utilize oral sedation. You will be given oral medication to take the night before your appointment and in the morning, you will take another medication. If the effects appear to be wearing off during your treatment, a member of our team will give you another dose so you remain relaxed.

Misconception #4: Children cannot undergo sedation dentistry.

Many people believe that only adults can undergo sedation dentistry techniques. Children also experience dental anxiety. Dr. Cross can discuss whether or not your child is a candidate and how they may be able to benefit from sedation options during their dental visit.

Misconception #5: Sedation dentistry is suitable for all patients.

Although both adults and children can be candidates for sedation dentistry, not every patient may be able to undergo sedation. It may not be suitable for you if you are pregnant, have certain medical conditions, are taking specific medications, or have an allergy to sedatives. During a consultation, Dr. Cross can determine if you are eligible.

Dr. Cross has done such a fabulous job in the 8+ years I’ve been his patient, it leaves him with very little work to do on me these past few years. I appreciate how he embraces and has mastered cutting-edge technology. It’s also comforting that he remembers minor details about the condition of my teeth without even having to refer to my chart. The girls at the front desk have an equally impressive memory and are so sweet and friendly.
